A Public Enterprise in the Service of Mass Murder: The Deutsche Reichsbahn and the Holocaust

Alfred C. Mierzejewski

Athens State University

Contrary to the myth that the Deutsche Reichsbahn propagated about itself, the author argues that the national railway knowingly participated in the annihilation of the Jews by Nazi Germany. He claims that the traffic in Holocaust victims was a politically significant matter that occupied the attention of the upper-level management of the railway and was well known by operating personnel. This traffic was small, however, in compar-ison to the other business conducted by the Reichsbahn. The result was an evident indifference toward the victims of Nazi genocide on the part of the vast majority of German railroaders.
