NEGOTIATING THE MEANING OF THE HOLOCAUST: AN OBSERVATION ON THE DEBATE ABOUT KAHANISM IN ISRAELI SOCIETY

GERALD CROMER

Bar llan University, Ramat Gan Israel

There is growing disagreement in Israel about the lessons to be learnt from the Holocaust. This is most clearly illustrated in the public debate that followed in the wake of Meir Kahane's election to the Knesset in 1984. Both he and his opponents use the Holocaust to legitimate their particular world-view Thus, Kahane tries to emphasize the enormity of the threat to Israel's physical and spiritual survival by comparing it to the destruction of European Jewry. Kahane's detractors, on the other hand, are at pains to point out both the similarity between his ideology and that of Nazi Germany and the obligation of Jews not to inflict on others the kinds of suffering they endured at the hands of Hitler.
