HUNGARY — SIX DAYS IN JULY 1944*

An outstanding question regarding the Holocaust is why Hungarian Regent Miklós Horthy, a confirmed antisemite, became the only Axis leader to use military force to prevent deportations of Jews. Documentary evidence points to 2 July 1944 as the critical date in a series of events leading to the prevention of deportations from Budapest. Horthy put down a coup attempt by Hungarian Nazis by employing loyal forces and circumventing his unrellable Chief of General Staff. This manoeuvre successfully neutralized many of the same people who were to deport the Jews and helped enable Horthy to issue the order halting deportations.
