HOSTAGES OF WORLD JEWRY: ON THE ORIGIN OF THE IDEA OF GENOCIDE IN GERMAN HISTORY

The ongoing controversy and debate among historians in the Federal Republic of Germany, regarding the historical roots of the Holocaust, serves as the background to this article. The questions involve issues such as what made the Holocaust possible and was there something unique in the history of antisemitism in Germany that resulted in the events of the Holocaust? This article examines the evolution of modem antisemitism as a European phenomenon, as well as the particular circumstances which set Germany apart from the rest of Europe. The main factors, however, which make German antisemitism unique and give it its sonderweg are the events and repercussions of World War I in Germany.
