RAUL HILBERG AND THE UNIQUENESS OF THE HOLOCAUST

Raul Hilberg's position on the Jews' responses to the Holocaust has been misunderstood, and this has led to an isolated focus on this aspect of his work, even with the publication of the revised edition of The Destruction of the European Jews. Hilberg does not seek to blame the victims. His harshness regarding their behavior, and more so regarding his main subject, the perpetrators, is designed to prevent the reader from changing the subject. That subject is to demonstrate the uniqueness of the crime and preclude trivializations and sometimes malicious generalizations whereby the Holocaust becomes the metaphor for all evil and suffering.
