PHILOSEMITISM — THE WHITEWASHING OF THE YELLOW BADGE IN WEST GERMANY 1945–1952*

The article sketches the main tendencies in the relationship of postwar Germans to Jews in the formative years of West Germany Under the impact of the Allied policies to denazify, democratize, and re-educate Germany. antisemitism became totally discredited in the public sphere. Yet it underwent changes and influenced the reactions to Jews and Jewish topics in the political culture. The article elaborates on the changes in attitudes toward Jews and deals with the struggle for a new beginning in Christian–Jewish relations. By analyzing philosemitism as a new phenomenon in German political culture the specific nature of the break with the German antisemtic tradition is indicated, and the limits of this discontinuity with in antisemitism are depicted. The article comes to the conclusion that the German postwar period in the context of German—Jewish relations is far from over.
