KURT SCHUMACHER, GERMAN SOCIAL DEMOCRACY AND THE PUNISHMENT OF NAZI CRIMES

FRANK M. BUSCHER

Chnstian Brothers University Memphis, Tennessee

Although many Social Democrats had suttered greatly during the Hitler dictatorship, their party eventually opposed the punishment of German war criminals by the Allies In the first years after the surrender, the SPD supported Allied war crimes trials. However, this position changed after the SPD leadership under Kurt Schumacher, himself a former concentration camp inmate, concluded that it needed to pay closer attention to the ‘national’ interest in order to obtain support from national-minded voters This influenced the party to denounced unpopular Allied programs, including war crimes trials. Unfortunately, the SPD's criticism only helped those who wanted to discredit the proceedings altogether.
