JEWISH SUFFERING AND CHRISTIAN SALVATION: THE EVANGELICAL-FUNDAMENTALIST HOLOCAUST MEMOIRS

YAAKOV ARIEL

The Hebrew University of Jerusalem Israel

This article examines Holocaust memoirs of evangelical Christians which have become widely circulated among evangelical-fundamentalists in the last two decades. It points out the way this conservative segment of Protestant Christianity interprets the Holocaust in light of its distinct theological views. In their opinion the Holocaust was caused by man's alienation from God. They assert that the true Christian believers, born-again evangelicals, demonstrated exemplary behavior throughout this period of turmoil. Whereas they show sympathy to Jewish suffering they believe that the misery and death that befell the Jewish people could have been avoided had the Jews accepted Jesus as their Savior. The memoirs further promote the idea that the victims must forgive their oppressors
